I made the Cursed Boyfriend Sweater as part of my first solo exhibition. It's based on the idea among knitters that if you hand knit your (assumed male) partner a sweater, or even any garment, your relationship will come to an end. Some people think it's because only a very strong relationship could survive this happening. If he doesn't like what you've made, all that effort, time, and love you put in would be in essence rejected.
Most non crafty people have absolutely no idea how much time and complicated skill goes into making a garment. It also has to fit the intended wearer, which involves sizing and shaping. I felt like it was a good symbol for emotional - and even household - labour that goes unappreciated. Many women these days still work a 'second shift', performing the majority of housework in addition to their day jobs. All that work going on behind the scenes, every floor scrubbed, every meal cooked, is like a single stitch worked. One stitch dropped and the whole thing can unravel.
