Driving through the park we spotted some deer. After getting lost in taking pictures, I realize a car is now behind me, so I take off, scaring the deer, which I think the people behind me were trying to watch too. 🤦🏼‍♀️ #outside365 #getoutside #outside365challenge #outsidefamily #outsidefam #outdoorfamilies #nature #wildandfreechildren #nomattertheweather #rainorshine #charlottemason #homeschool #homeschooling #nochildleftinside #outsidemom #vitaminN #raiseawildchild #optoutside #outsideeveryday #greenhour #outdoormama #natureplay #Ohio

Have you checked out today’s Weekly Summit? We haven’t got around to carving our pumpkins yet, but I am thinking we might need to try out the polka dot pumpkins carved using an electric drill or a simple kitchen corer. Happy Friday!! I’m just going to admit right now that I did not see this morning’s sunrise (😴), but this Iowa sunrise from a few days ago deserves to be shared, don’t you agree!?! 🌅 ⁣ ⁣ Our construction company @oaktreehomes is hosting a big fall event tomorrow to celebrate 10 years with the barn! Hard to believe we moved it in 2009! We’re serving up hayrack rides, a bonfire, food and fun out here. 🤞🏻 for no 🌧!!⁣ ⁣ And on Sunday I’m off to @custerstateparksd in @southdakota for the 2019 Family Travel Association Summit. I’m excited to visit South Dakota in the fall and to meet new faces in the family travel space. I think it’s so important to travel with your kids! ✈️ 🏔 🍁⁣ ⁣ What’s on your weekend agenda?! Give me coffee to change the things I can, and the mountains to accept the things I can’t. Mountain exorcism was needed for all yesterday. It had been a week since I took the toddler out. Let me tell you he let me know it too. My friend pulls up and looks like life punched her in the face after it punched me in the back of the head and ran. The weather was not great. Windy and rain was threatening. But we all loaded our sorry butts in my car and drove to the trailhead. The wind wasn’t bad once we got into the side canyon and the rain never managed to catch us. We did hike out all of our frustrations, pent up energy and had a splendid time enjoying the healing powers of nature. It was one of those days I didn’t want to leave the mountains. Once again reminding me how important it is to disconnect from everyday life. We were totally different people on the car ride home. This all makes me realize how incredibly grateful I am to live in such a beautiful place that affords me the luxury of day vacations.
Thank you to @inthefieldstl for sharing this post of our workshop on outdoor play with loose parts. It is a happy day when we facilitate learning with adults and they so beautifully represent the materials prepared for them! @sarahkate55 and I could not bring our natural loose parts to Kentucky from Canada, so these loose parts were scavenged from around our hotel (Sarah was a total boss, asking construction guys for access to their work site! 😋) Ultimately, we all got to look closely at some local loose parts and reflect on the affordances for play natural materials offer our students in outdoor learning environments! #naaee2019
This is what happens when I don’t supervise them playing with chalk... I now have 2 blue smurfs happily in the bath 😅 who knew chalk was also a great body paint/sensory play material 🤣
What about time outside in man-made environments, does it count? ⁣ ⁣ Is it ok that my kids spend their outdoor time on a trampoline in the backyard, or riding their scooters along the footpath? ⁣ ⁣ Do I need to make sure they are actually playing in ‘nature’?⁣ ⁣ This is a question I’ve heard a few times, usually from busy mums. ⁣ ⁣ And I always answer it by telling them they are doing a great job. ⁣ ⁣ If you are managing to get your kids out the door and doing something active regularly, then you are doing well. ⁣ ⁣ If outside means riding a scooter on the footpath or playing in a playground, that’s fine.⁣ ⁣ Those activities provide lots of opportunities for active play and gross motor development. ⁣ ⁣ Are there unique benefits to green spaces? Yes. ⁣ ⁣ But if you live in the city, the bulk of your everyday play might in constructed environments.⁣ ⁣ I notice that even if we’re outside walking through the main street of town, my children can run and jump and move about with more freedom than they have indoors. ⁣ ⁣ So I count all outside time as a win. ⁣ ⁣ In the last house we lived in, the only walking track from our door ventured through a shopping centre carpark and behind a block of warehouses. And yet we still enjoyed getting out with the scooters and pram—stretching our legs, noticing the birds and the sky.⁣ ⁣ 📸 At the Nature Playground in Royal Park, Melbourne⁣ ⁣ Do you have a lovely green space in your area? ⁣ ⁣ Or is your daily walk past a bus depot? ⁣ ⁣ Do you think it makes a difference? ⁣ ⁣ #optoutside #nature #outdoorfamilies #royalparknatureplayground #letthembelittle #everykidinapark #outfam #kidstoparks #natureplay #childrenatnatureplay #wildandfreechildren #hikingwithkids #hiking #parenthood #candidchildhood #nochildleftinside #naturewalk #parenting #naturekids #outsidefamily #ouryearoutdoorsblog

This is the big question that emerges each time I speak about outdoor play and learning. And it is a complicated story of policies, fear-based decision making, and uncertainty around the competency and capabilities of children to make decisions around how they use their own bodies. I’m thankful to the audience in our workshop today for your questions and descriptions of challenges in holding space for risk-taking in outdoor play. Cultural change happens one child at a time. It is the hard work of outdoor learning, but essential to the future of environmental education 🌱 Getting clear on why we do the work we do goes along way in changing the hearts and minds of parents, administrators, and colleagues towards embracing the important role risk-taking plays in outdoor learning!

“To trace the history of a river or a raindrop, as John Muir would have done, is also to trace the history of the soul, the history of the mind descending and arising in the body. In both, we constantly seek and stumble on divinity…” – Gretel Ehrlich

Probably one of my very favorite days of 2019. It was on one of my favorite mountains, with one of my favorite humans and it was one of my favorite triumphs. If it wasn’t so windy this morning I’d go back. The wind from saddle to summit on this hike can be brutal. Not toddler approved. On today’s hike I’ll be bringing his rain/wind cover for his framed pack because both might happen. Toto, we aren’t in the mild grip of summer anymore. Utah shoulder seasons are insane. Imagine the girl who changes her outfit multiple times before she’s ready to go out only to make it to her friends house and change again. Today we will have multiple outfit changes. Yippee.

Year 2 Outside 365: Day 354-Today we took a walk at Inniswood. I’m always looking for a barred owl when I’m there, but no luck today. I've been struggling lately to figure out find my "place" in the world. It would seem that so many people my age have it all figured out. ⠀ If you think that's me then let me set the record straight. Yes, I have been married for over 2 and a half years and Henry and I successfully designed and built our own tiny house. But the journey to get here was definitely not easy and there were times that we honestly didn't know if we'd ever get the #tinyhouse habitable. ⠀ When touring colleges as a junior in highschool I intentionally picked places where I wouldn't have to apply to a specific school within the college. I had absolutely no idea what I wanted to do and it baffled me that some of my fellow classmates had such clear visions of where life would lead them. ⠀ I would not change my college experience for the world-- #LutherCollege is where I met lifelong friends, my husband, and professors who changed my worldview. At one point I had three declared majors, finally settling on double majoring in Anthropology and Environmental Studies with an individualized concentration in Health. ⠀ If you google "Anthropology Major" you will find an article called "Best College Major to Change Your Life" and also Forbes' "The 10 Worst College Majors" no.1 being Anthropology and Archaeology. I always knew I wanted to do something with my life where I felt I was making a real difference. I joined the field of architecture with the goal of helping design healthy, more sustainable buildings. Being in this field undoubted helped me gain the skills needed to design our house, but at the same time I often feel a disconnect with the work I do on a daily basis and truly making an impact. ⠀ So if you're struggling with where you are now, know that you are NOT the only one. I get fired up talking about health, happiness and sustainability and find that for me these topics really start at home. I want to do more in sharing our journey to go tiny so I've decided to focus my energies on our house insta handle @radtinyhome. If you'd like to follow along I'd be so honored.
Mrs. Standifer's 7th grade English class was outside today, catching crawdads and getting a lesson in these little creatures from Mrs. Greene, our Assistant Director of Outdoor Education. Why was an English class catching crawdads? Mrs. Standifer is teaching her students how to write a 5-paragraph essay, and the experience will form the basis for their essays. Students will be able to choose to write a creative, expository, or narrative essay afterwards. At Silverdale, we believe students learn better from engaging experiences such as these! #NoChildLeftInside #SBAOutdoorLearning #SBAtwenty
JUST WRITING THIS GIVES ME ANXIETY… ⁣🥴 ⁣ Step 1. Go outside (too many pre-steps to list just to get out the door 🚪, but we finally get out, (please deliver the trophy 🏆 to the address listed below))⁣ ⁣ Step 2. Child turns on hose 💦 (good thing water is free 💸)⁣ ⁣ Step 3. Child removes clothes 👚 (that took way too long to put on ⏱) ⁣ Step 4. Child soaks herself and every thing/one around her (her older sister is now yelling 😡 and her twin is crying 😭)⁣ ⁣ Step 5. Child plays in mud (well I didn’t really want to bathe you again 🛁 )⁣ ⁣ Step 6. Child wipes mud on wall that stains and won’t come off (thank you Hawaii dirt 🏝) ⁣ Step 7. My landlord hates me even more (hit three strikes a long time ago ❌❌❌)⁣ ⁣ YOU’RE NOT ALONE IN HAVING REASONS WHY YOU JUST WANT TO STAY INSIDE 🏡! ⁣ BUT the benefits are just too good, so today we are chatting about ways to make it easier and why it is sooooooo worth it (I’ll post a video after I get my kiddos to school. Thank you for sharing all of your ideas! They all ring true to so many of us).
“So much of our world is changing, and not for the better. If a child grows up never walking in the woods, digging in the soil, seeing animals in their habitat, climbing a mountain, playing in a stream, or staring at the endless horizon of an ocean, they may never really understand what there is to be lost. The future of our planet depends on our children; they need to learn to appreciate it.”

Hey all! @osuhomebase here taking over the feed as Brittany is out of town. "Taking over" is sort of a misnomer because we work together on just about everything, but Brit is truly the voice of this feed so wish me luck! This week I've been putzing through old photos from old Abu Dhabi work trips and posting on my personal account, so I'll use those as inspiration for content here. Our travels to AD really planted the travel bug that eventually inspired FivePax. I am lucky enough to work for #NYU and as part of my job I have had a few assignments assisting the #NYUAD campus off the ground. The campus is as stunning as other developments in the area. At one time it was the largest active construction project in the world and now it is a beautiful oasis for students and researchers to experience a new culture and learn at a world class institution and facility. Experiencing AD opened our eyes to a lot of thoughts, ideas, and motivations that drive what FivePax is today. I've been faced with the challenge and importance of cultural immersion in a place where on the surface some of my values don't always align. It turns out that when you talk to actual people, people care about people, and sometimes there are forces that we are all working to overcome. This is something that has been reinforced just about everywhere I've been. People are inherently good. We have some obvious issues in the USA too. Our philosophy has become if people would just travel more and actually talk, we'd start to breakdown some of this tribal and identity based political venom that we are experiencing today. I've also been faced with assignments involving time away from my kids. So we put a lot of thought into turning these assignments into opportunity. On my last trip, the family came. We used my work flight and the fact that Rowan was under 2 to get a "cheap" ticket to the other side of the world for everyone else. Since we were halfway there, we extended the trip and I took vacation time to visit Thailand. It was so epic and educational, and now we can't get enough! I'm curious before I continue rambling, what is your travel philosophy and what has travel meant to your family?

We spend our time here and gymnastics. My oldest is not into either but he decided to give silks a try with blonde boy number 2. I was super proud of him for trying something new. Afterwords he let me know it really isn’t his thing and gave his brother props for doing something hard. It’s quiet on all other fronts. Our trailer is stationary for a few weeks. Little projects are getting done and school is moving right along. We are gearing up for our next trip near the end of November out to Texas, Arkansas, and New Mexico. So for now, we are just staying a different kind of busy. @sandiegocircuscenter @thervteen

Yesterday morning I woke up early and took the pups for a quick trip to Barclay Lake. I really love how a family-friendly trail only a few miles off Hwy 2 grants access to views like this. We carried Rowan here when she was just a babe, she walked here on her own as a small child, and now that she's a "big kid" maybe I can lure her back for an overnight with the promise of s'mores...🍫🤞🍫

I have to admit I have been pretty remiss in setting up opportunities to discover for the boys recently our (hopefully) last bout of winter illness took its toll on my energy. But after seeing this I don’t feel the slightest bit bad about it. I filled up the Bunnings clam for them to have a splash about and immediately they initiated their own game of discovery 👏 if I hadn’t listened to their chit chat it would just look like they were making a huge mess, but actually they were racing around finding any small parts they could get their hands on then shouting sink or float as they threw it into the water. Mr 4 explained the concept to mr 2 who didn’t yet know it and together they had a blast guessing there way through random things :) Watching the play happily together always fills me with such joy, but them creating fun learning experiences together is next level 😍😍

Last week when we visited @madisoncountyiowa I made the offhand remark to my husband that a warrior ninja course would be a fun addition to our homestead after visiting @thepumpkinranchiowa! ⁣ Well ... one weekend later and we have what I’d like to call a rough draft of a course. Can you tell I’m a recovering English teacher?! 🤣🤣 ⁣ ⁣ Anyhow, while nothing was purchased to build this course, and I commend my family’s efforts, this is not quite what I had in mind. 🤣🤣I think a few modifications might be necessary. ⛑ ⁣ ⁣ Pardon me while I go make sure our health care premiums are all paid up! 🤣🤣 I may or may not drink some wine too. 🥂! ⁣ ⁣ Well really, the awesome thing about this, is that the kids have been outside nonstop. As a family, don’t worry about what you will do with your weekend, worry about where you will go! Pick a place outside where the kids can run and play and be in nature. Where they can be thoughtful or wild, social or quiet. Where they can be goofy and be messy and act like a kid should.
