I started this journey in March 2018.
I’d just come back from a 7-week trip to Europe and found a new direction for my life and my work.
I thought to myself: Hey, so you graduated from LASALLE with a degree in Musical Theatre even though you’d never performed before in your life. I’m sure transitioning from theatre to music will be a breeze!
I remember in acting class, one of my teachers used to tell us that “If something scares you, you probably need it.” I took that to mean that if something scares me, it’s because it means so much to me that it makes me worry about what others might think. I was afraid of “failing” because that would’ve reminded me that I made the wrong decision — That I wasn’t as “talented” as I thought I was.
Either way, I posted a few raw (and barely edited) covers on YouTube and within the month had secured a gig at Paulaner @ CQ and a residency at the W Hotel, Sentosa Cove. Then I participated in a Chinese singing competition 华谊 icon search 新星盛典 (even though I only knew one Chinese song, 童話) just so I could challenge myself to step outside of my comfort zone.
Now it’s September 2019.
It’s been exactly 1.5 years.
I’ve performed at various live music venues, sung at weddings, and performed my original music to small audiences here and there. I’ve also gotten to perform at the Concourse @ Esplanade multiple times — More checks off the bucket list!
I’m currently working on releasing my original music and getting them up onto streaming platforms. It might look easy, but there are so many aspects to the production and distribution of music that most people aren’t even aware of — It’s a huge learning curve, and the learning never stops!
About a week ago, I was invited to attend the COMPASS Awards. It was my first time there and everything was new and exciting! I listened attentively to all the speeches given by the award winners and was extremely inspired. I also met my favourite singing teacher at LASALLE, Dr Su Sun Wong, who encouraged me to pursue music overseas.
I’m a big believer that when one door closes, others will always open. You just have to be ready to walk through when they do.
