The Moonglows - I’ve Been Your Dog (Ever Since I’ve Been Your Man) / I Just Can’t Tell No Lie
Champagne 7 500 (1953)
This is a piece of Rock ‘n Roll & Doo Wop history. It’s extremely rare and I’m lucky enough to own an original 1st issue copy at the moment (however, I may be willing to sell this if I receive the right offer). Harvey Fuqua and Bobby Lester formed a vocal group called the Crazy Sounds in Cleveland, Ohio, 1951. Local Cleveland radio host Alan Freed (the guy that apparently coined the phrase “Rock and Roll”) saw them perform and became their manager. They changed their name to The Moonglows and this was the only record released locally in Cleveland on Freed’s Champagne record label. It is now as rare as rocking horse poop. The Moonglows of course went on to be one of the most successful vocal Doo Wop groups of all time and sparked the careers of many others, including Marvin Gaye. But this record is what started it all.
