👨🏼🦳 👦🏻 👵🏼
👨🏼🦳 Mr. Madanjit Singh Walia
👵🏼 Mrs. Aban Walia
My real grandfather :
Madanjit Walia better known as “Maddi” lived most of his life in Indore until he moved to a farm in Bhopal many years back which he now calls home.
He was amongst 12 children, and now the oldest surviving member of his family.
His father was based in Burma, where he supplied tents to both the army and the civilians which made his father a very wealthy man. His father loved cricket and started the first ever cricket team in Burma, back in the day.
My grandfather was a very handsome guy, like a Hollywood star. He was big and would scare the daylights out of people who dared to look at or talk to his daughters.
His first marriage with my grandmother ended because in his heart of hearts he was always in love with the woman who is married to now.
She belonged to the Parsi community, and back then for her marrying outside her community was a big thing, so she never married him at first, but later she became a believer of Christ, which changed everything.
If he would have not remarried, i would have not met my step-grandpa, so frankly whatever happens, happens for the best.
He was extremely fond of my step-grandfather “Sardar Bolia”. Being friends for over 70 years is no joke. When Sardar Bolia was in hospital, my grandad would call and check on him every day until Sardar Bolia finally bid goodbye to this world after I returned back to L.A. to study and work.
Probably the worst day of my life.
Real grand-dad was a self made man, who liked working and keeping busy. He did so till he was about 80 while the time he was back in Indore for a few years.
Thanks to him and his 11 sibling, I have hundreds of cousins spread all across the world of all ages, half of whom I still haven’t met yet.
One thing I learned from him was the way he lived, always active and always on time. Never crossed more than 2 drinks of scotch, ever.
On the 15th of September, his 97th birthday was celebrated. I called him and we had a nice long chat about how the monsoon really messed up our plans of meeting up. 🌧
